Benefits of Oats + Recipe

In one of my nutrition classes awhile back, we learned about the benefits of whole grains and why they are beneficial to our health.

Here are just a few benefits of whole grains and why we should incorporate them in our diet:

  • They help in weight management {make you feel fuller}
  • They have a low fat content and prevents cardio vascular diseases
  • Helps prevent Type II Diabetes
  • Helps with your gastrointestinal health
  • Helps prevent cancer {aids in getting rid of toxins}
  • Whole grains {including oats} contain all major nutrient groups {along with phytochemicals and antioxidants}

One example of a whole grain is oats.  Now I will be honest, before I tried these recipes I have tried oatmeal once and thought it was nasty {aka instant oatmeal with no flavor}.

However, I have seen Overnight Oats on Pinterest and blogs and thought I’d give oatmeal a second chance {they make them look so tasty}.  The biggest difference between overnight oats and oatmeal I prepared before was that you do not cook the oats, you eat them raw.

I tried a Strawberry Banana Overnight Oats Recipe.  And holy moly, did it taste AWESOME.  It has a creamy chunky texture, which can sound like a turn off, but I enjoyed it.  I DEFINITELY recommend trying these! Not only are they tasty, they are a great source of protein, fiber, and nutrients!

[yumprint-recipe id=’13’]Let me know how this recipe turns out for you if you try it!  Another great version is PB Banana- you just add in 1 tbsp of creamy peanut butter/PB2 and would use a more “neutral” yogurt flavor in place of the strawberry yogurt.  What’s your fave overnight oats recipe?
